My name is Mark Dexter Cogburn, and I go by Dexter. I want to begin by personally thanking you for taking the time to spend getting to learn about me as a person and a candidate for your vacancy. I pray that God would give guidance for both you and me as we navigate what His perfect will is in all of our situations. With that said, I would like to give you a brief snapshot of who I am.
I was born February 7, 1991. I grew up on a family ranch with my parents and sister. I graduated from Wright City High School in Wright City, OK as valedictorian. While in high school, I participated in sports, curriculum contests, and the academic bowl team. I attended college at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK. Due to difficulty commuting from school to the town I was a Youth Pastor in, as well as unforeseen medical expenses, I did not finish my degree. I do look forward to hopefully going back online this Fall and completing my Bachelors in Education, and then attending Bible school of some kind to obtain a Masters.
I have lived in Oklahoma, Texas, and now Nebraska. I was raised Southern Baptist and served in Southern Baptist Churches until 2024, in which I began working in an Evangelical Free Church. On top of working in churches, I have also sold insurance for Brotherhood Mutual and worked as a Technology Specialist for Wright City Schools. I have also volunteered in coaching basketball at the Little League, Middle School, and High School level. I began fostering in 2020, and have had a total of 6 children in my home, the last of which became my son. Yes, I am single, but hope that changes in the near future.
The past 4.5 years of ministry have been hard as I have served as the sole Pastor in both churches I have worked in, and have ended up being handed more responsibility than any person can handle themselves long-term. While I transitioned to a new church last year, several issues that were not expressed to me while in the candidate process have arisen that are causing a significant increase in my work load as Pastor, and I have prayerfully reached the conclusion that I cannot continue in ministry in this manner. It is my prayer and desire that I can find a like-minded church with a ministry team that holds each other accountable, supports one another with prayer and encouragement, and can share the load of ministry in order to be the most effective we can at the calling God has placed on our lives.
Thanks for taking the time to get to know me and I hope the information below gives you a good idea of who I am as both a person and minister. Please feel free to reach out should you have any further questions, or if you would like to obtain references. God bless you and know that you are in my prayers as you also seek out God’s will for your congregation.

For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. 16 Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.

Statement of Faith and Positions
-
I believe in one God, Creator of all things, holy, infinitely perfect, and eternally existing in a loving unity of three equally divine Persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Having limitless knowledge and sovereign power, God has graciously purposed from eternity to redeem a people for Himself and to make all things new for His own glory. God is infinite in holiness and all other perfections. God is all powerful and all knowing; and His perfect knowledge extends to all things, past, present, and future. We owe Him the highest love, reverence, obedience, and praise.
-
I believe that God created Adam and Eve in His image, but in their free will, they sinned when tempted by Satan. In unity with Adam, human beings are sinners by nature and by choice, alienated from God, and under His wrath. Because of our sinful nature, there is no work in which we can perform that can provide our own righteousness or salvation.
-
I believe that Jesus Christ, as our representative and substitute, shed His blood on the cross as the perfect, all-sufficient sacrifice for our sins. His atoning death and victorious resurrection constitute the only ground for salvation. Only through repentance of sins and declaration of Christ as Lord can salvation be obtained. It cannot be earned by any works, but rather by grace by faith alone.
-
I believe that the true church comprises all of the redeemed of all the ages, believers from every tribe, and tongue, and people, and nation.. They are united by the Holy Spirit in the body of Christ, of which He is the Head. It is their purpose to live out the Great Commission of Christ: to go make disciples, baptizing them, and teaching them all things commanded by Christ as found in God’s scriptures
-
The Lord Jesus mandated two ordinances, baptism and the Lord’s Supper, which visibly and tangibly express the gospel.
Through Baptism, we illustrate our death to sin, and new life in which we are made clean through Christ’s atoning work. I personally believe in credo-baptism by immersion.
Through the Lord’s Supper, we memorialize the death of Christ and look forward in hope to His Second Coming.
Though the ordinances are not the means of salvation, when celebrated by the church in genuine faith, these ordinances confirm and nourish the believer.

God created both man and woman uniquely different, yet both in His image. It is my firm belief that any attempt to deny, alter, or deform what God has designed is a denial of God’s authority over His creation.
God’s ultimate design was for a man and woman to become one through marriage. God’s plan has always been that sexual intimacy is meant for only those within a biblical marriage covenant. Any sexual intimacy between anyone other than a man and woman joined together in marriage is an affront to God’s design of creation.
-
I believe in the personal, bodily and glorious return of our Lord Jesus Christ. In His return, He will bring about defeat to His enemies and bring about the final judgment of all men. The coming of Christ, at a time known only to God, demands constant expectancy and, as our blessed hope, motivates the believer to godly living, sacrificial service and energetic mission.
-
I believe that God spoke His perfect Will through inperfect men, and therefore all of Scripture is:
the inerrant Word of God, without error in the original writings,
the complete revelation of His will for salvation
the ultimate authority by which every realm of human knowledge and endeavor should be judged.
to be believed in all that it teaches, obeyed in all that it requires, and trusted in all that it promises.

Both women and men played a critical role in God’s work through His covenant with Israel and in the early church. God desires all believers to live out the Great Commission, which includes proclaiming the Gospel and teaching what was commanded by Christ through Scripture. However, it is my conviction and opinion that the office of Pastor and Elder is scripturally reserved for qualified men. The office of deacon and lay leadership are open to all believers, as there is not a clear distinction otherwise.

Sermon Samples
My current and previous stint as Lead Pastor has seen a “wide net” ministry, in which I was tasked with filling several different leadership roles within the church. This has led to an inability to prepare in the delivery of sermons to the level of excellence it truly deserves. It is my desire that my next ministry position allow a more narrowed focus of ministry responsibilities to ensure I can be as effective in the delivery of God’s Word when I am called up on to do so.
About Asher
Asher came into my life on May 31, 2022. Initially, I was just supposed to be a short-term placement until a permanent home could be found. Two weeks into his stay in my house, they announced intentions to terminate parental rights, and asked that I consider adopting him. On July 28, 2022 they terminated parental rights and other family members declined the possibility of taking him in. This left me as the prioritized placement for him. Having been in prayer about it for several weeks, I knew without a doubt that he would be mine. While being a single parent was never the plan, I know that he will grow up to know the Lord, to hear the gospel, and hopefully make a profession of faith in Jesus one day. That is not always a guarantee for foster children. We walked through the adoption process, and on June 28, 2023 he officially became Mark Asher Jude Cogburn. Here are a few things about Asher:
He was in Foster Care for 18 months
He is 8 years old and in the 2nd grade
He is a member of the Cherokee Nation
He loves school and his favorite subjects are Recess and Science
His favorite sports are basketball and wrestling
His favorite toys are his cars and bey-blades
He loves to draw and read
He loves meeting new people and exploring new places
